Globally, human-wildlife interactions around wildlife reserves frequently result in conflict. This loss of livelihoods and lives directly affects the conservation of wildlife and wild places. Over the past eight years, our award winning novel conservation intervention – Wild Seve – has served as a lifeline for communities affected by human-wildlife conflict (HWC). We bridge the gap between these communities and the government in mitigating and addressing human-wildlife conflict.
Affected residents reach out to us during moments of crisis through our toll-free helpline. Our dedicated field staff, who belong to these very communities, are swiftly dispatched to these sites. They document the damage, assist families in filing and tracking ex-gratia compensation claims with the government. Our program helps transcend barriers of illiteracy, inherent transactional costs and a complex government process, to provide free and transparent access to ex-gratia compensation for HWC incidents.
Till date, we have filed over 24,000 cases, assisting ~10,900 individuals and families in receiving the ex-gratia compensation from the government. What started in 2015 around Nagarahole and Bandipur National Parks has expanded to multiple wildlife parks across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, serving more than 1500 village settlements and over half a million people.
